There's nothing left to do but go our separate ways

I’ve recently heard an estimate that about 20% of the population both recognise where “our” government is taking us, and categorically reject the new relationship, between state and individual, it is intent upon delivering.

That 20% amount to more than twice the state of Denmark (though, there is something rotten, there). This is more than ample for a viable nation.

I believe most of the 20% appreciate that the problem extends much further than Mr Johnson’s current administration, with the machinery of Her Majesty’s opposition throbbing more harmoniously as it copilots us to our intended fate. The current show of apparent resistance, by the back benchers (many of whom may have been granted leave on account of Starmer’s iron command of his legions), aside, we can have scant hope in our “representative democracy” bringing our deliverance.

In these circumstances, I propose it is time to, and necessary to, launch an independence movement.

I will, observe, before continuing, that there is nothing illegal about pursuit, or declaration, of independence. World history is replete with examples of good people doing both.

Our case is unusual. Previous separatists, as far as I am aware, have enjoyed geographical, as well, I assume, as a certain amount of philosophical, proximity. The 20%, however, has only a philosophical association. This, of course, presents practical considerations, but I am certain that a shared philosophical outlook is the primary determinant of the success of a new nation.

Millions of people have abandoned everything they held for the sole objective of preserving their liberty. They were wise, for a life without liberty is a life without value.

No comparable sacrifice, fortunately, is in prospect for the 20%. Private land aside, each individual, of the 20%, has a claim upon the territory equal to that of each individual of the remaining 80%. This should be, and I believe will be, recognised and respected.

A substantial amount of relocation, by the 20%, and some amount by the 80%, would be necessary, once a land division has been negotiated. House moves, as these will be, would be far from the limit of the disruption, as people seek new work from their new abode, and children join new schools. However, there could be nothing approaching the trauma of arriving in a foreign land, with only the clothes upon one’s back, and, perhaps and odd, hastily packed, suitcase.

We must not embark upon anything without the determination, when circumstances demand, to carry it through.

However, I have considerable confidence that successful creation of a separatist movement will eliminate the need for separation. When the issue is brought to the fore, and the whole population forced to confront it, the divide will, surely, shift in our favour. It would then become down to a minority of micromanagement-craving, eager subjects for human vivisection, to decide whether they wished to leave us, to establish their sadomasochist dystopia, possibly on the Isle of Wight.
