Today the BBC has re-published another video article (this one from 2019) featuring long-standing employee David Attenborough. The video shows scenes of calamity and collapse and has a single main message – ‘act now or we are all doomed’: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p076w7g5
Despite its title there is no attempt whatsoever at a balanced analysis of ‘the facts’.
The video also features the discredited Michael Mann whose faulty algorithm created the famous ‘hockey stick ‘ that so exercised Al Gore: https://climate.news/2019-08-26-climate-change-hoax-collapses-as-michael-mann-bogus-hockey-stick-graph.html and Greta Thunberg who has no scientific credentials or arguably any right to be included in a ‘fact-based’ video.
Toward the end of the video Attenborough declares, ‘We now stand at a unique point in our planet’s history, one where we must all share responsibility both for our present well-being and for the future of life.’
Hyperbole, hubris, hysteria but no humility. We have apparently become the gods of ancient Greece, able to control all aspects of life, including the planet.
It is unclear how we all have responsibility for ‘the future of life’, which managed very well before humans existed (https://www.newscientist.com/article/dn17453-timeline-the-evolution-of-life/) and, according to scientists of Attenborough’s ilk, will inevitably change according to the laws of evolution. But we surely do have responsibility toward each other, which arguably includes not alarming people unnecessarily and supporting the mental health of young people, which according to many reports is at a nadir where:
“Nearly 60% of young people approached said they felt very worried or extremely worried.
More than 45% of those questioned said feelings about the climate affected their daily lives.
Three-quarters of them said they thought the future was frightening. Over half (56%) say they think humanity is doomed.” (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-58549373)
Do you agree or disagree with the proposal below?
As you respond please include any relevant evidence if you are able.
It is proposed that the ‘climate establishment’ has a fundamental responsibility to provide balanced information, not least in the interest of young people’s mental health
